Mass on the top of the Galtees at the cross
Mass was said at the cross on the top of the Galtee mountains in 1975. Now almost forty years later, weather permitting, the plan is to say mass on the same spot on Saturday 13th June 2015 at 12.30pm. Its planned as a family friendly climb, beginning from the Kings yard off the Kilbenenny-Cahir road. Its planned as a festive occasion with music, song and dance. If weather is a problem then we go to plan B, thanks to the facilities in King’s yard, we still go ahead with the festivities, if we can’t say mass on the top of the mountain we will say it on the foothills. If we can’t do the full climb we will do a partial climb. In any case, there is no postponement or cancellation, so come along we are going to have a celebration. Those who do not feel up to the climb are most welcome to join the party at 3pm. Refreshments are available. All are welcome, the road way to the Kings yard will be well sign posted.
Every mountain is a sacred place, our mountain is a sacred place. In the mass we will thank God for this ancient and timeless monument, we will remember the people who lived on the mountain, those who built the four kilometres wall, those who used the Booley huts and made the Lazy Beds, all those involved in the four different crosses, 1933,1954,1962 and 1975.We are happy to tell you that the famous “Kathy Daly” that helped to carry the cross to the summit will be on display. We won’t forget the three men who were killed in the plane crash in 1976. We are grateful to the many people who lovingly care for the mountain, photograph it, write about it and care for the cross. We salute the members of the mountain rescue services who are so skilled at their tasks and give generously of their time.
This is a sponsored climb, proceeds go the Ballylanders Church Fund, we would be grateful for your generosity.
